Tasting Notes Milk Chocolate - This coffee is a washed process, lending it more to presenting the natural terroir of the region. In earth-forward coffees it’s difficult to not pick up a touch of cocoa, but in this specific cup we noticed a particular sweetness and smoothness to come alongside it. Apple Cider - Kenyan peaberry coffees tend to be juicy, and this coffee certainly meets that expectation. A bright malic acidity rests comfortably in this cup, which has us thinking apple cider. Hibiscus - We enjoy the depth of complexity African coffees always bring to the table, and the nuanced acidity alongside herbal notes has us landing on hibiscus. Kii Factory Coffee Production This coffee comes from a Kenyan coffee cooperative–referred to in Kenya as a ‘factory’--made up of over 850 smallholders in the Kirinyaga region. Owned and operated by Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), this factory is well known for its production of consistent, high-quality coffee. Farmers belonging to the FCS grow their coffee cherries at 1,310 to 1,900 meters above sea level on small plots of land (usually less than 2.5 acres each). They handpick their cherries multiple times throughout the harvest season, ensuring only the ripest cherries are picked, before delivering them to the Kii factory. Once at the factory, the cherries are depulped, fermented, washed, and dried on raised beds. Because of their meticulous sorting and processing methods, the factory is known to produce clean, bright cups with a nice balance of sweetness and complexity.
