Lord Krishna in Tholu Bommalata by Sindhe Siva
This beautiful Tholu Bommalata artwork by Sindhe Siva depicts Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu and the central figure of the Bhagavata Purana and Mahabharata, rendered through the traditional shadow puppetry of Andhra Pradesh in a form that embodies divine charm and majestic authority. As a foundational avatar whose life and teachings form a major pillar of Indian epic lore and performance traditions, Krishna occupies a place of profound devotional significance within the artform's traditional repertoire. Tholu Bommalata, the "dance of leather puppets" is a shadow theatre tradition of the Telugu-speaking Deccan with a history reaching back some two thousand years. Its performances are historically drawn from a Telugu version of the Ramayana compiled for the shadow stage, alongside episodes from the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. Puppets are cut from goat, deer or buffalo hide, cleaned and treated over roughly two weeks until translucent, then hand-painted with natural dyes and finely perforated so that, held before a lit screen, each figure glows as a vivid, coloured shadow. Lord Krishna is depicted here with his iconic blue-toned complexion, his posture poised and graceful. He wears his Pitambara garments, including a golden-yellow dhoti and shawl. Both garments are patterned and have multi-coloured, ornamental borders. His feet are adorned with delicate white anklets, while a flower garland adorns his neck. His head is crowned with an elaborate multi-tiered kirita of red, gold and white, matched by his earrings, bangles, armbands and layered necklaces. In his right hand, Krishna holds his flute (murali), richly detailed with tassels, while his left hand rests gracefully on his hip in a gesture of effortless composure. As a commanding figure around whom so many tales of love, philosophy and heroic conflict revolve, this artwork captures Krishna with the serene composure and radiant grace his divine persona demands. Sindhe Siva's rendering brings together the full expressive range of the tradition, its rich natural pigments, elaborate ornamentation and signature perforated glow.
