Caravans Watercolour on paper, 1936 This haunting watercolour depicts two fever wagons, originally used during the Boer War, and possibly as early as the Crimean War. The wagons were later transported to Newhaven, Sussex, where they were left at the chalk pits near Peggy Angus’s home, Furlongs, where Ravilious was staying at the time. Ravilious asked if he could purchase the wagons and subsequently transformed them for his own use—turning one into a bedroom and the other into a studio. It was presumably in this unusual studio that he painted Caravans, capturing the distinctive atmosphere and character of these remarkable old wagons.
