Oil on Canvas, Portrait of Princess Eugénie de Beauharnais

After Johann Heinrich Richter (German, 1784–1850) A finely executed portrait after Johann Heinrich Richter's celebrated likeness of Princess Eugénie de Beauharnais, Duchess of Hohenzollern-Hechingen. The sitter is depicted half-length, wearing a white Empire-style gown with a sheer gauze wrap and jeweled ornaments, her distinctive ringlet coiffure faithfully following Richter's celebrated composition of circa 1834. While preserving the princess's elegant features, the artist has reinterpreted the costume and setting with a more restrained palette and simplified composition, creating a portrait of quiet refinement characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century Continental court painting. Presented in a handsome late nineteenth-century giltwood frame with molded profile and applied foliate composition corner ornaments.
