SPECIAL HOBBY 1/72 Gloster Meteor T Mk.7 ‘British Jet Trainer’ Plastic Model KitThe Gloster Meteor holds a unique place in aviation history as Britain’s first operational jet fighter and the only Allied jet aircraft to enter service during the Second World War. The prototype first flew on 5 March 1943, with operational introduction following in the summer of 1944 when No. 616 Squadron RAF became the first unit to receive the type. Designed under the direction of George Carter, the Meteor was powered by twin turbojet engines and became the world’s first mass-produced Allied jet fighter, second only to the German Me 262 in operational jet development.During the war the Meteor was employed primarily in the interception of V-1 flying bombs, where its speed and climb performance made it particularly effective. Although it did not engage German jet fighters in combat, it proved its value as a frontline defensive weapon. After 1945 the type continued to develop extensively, becoming a mainstay of RAF post-war jet operations and serving in numerous roles including fighter, fighter-bomber and training duties.The T Mk.7 was developed as a dedicated two-seat conversion trainer to introduce pilots to jet operations. Based on the standard Meteor airframe, it featured a lengthened forward fuselage to accommodate instructor and trainee in tandem seating, while retaining the type’s characteristic twin-engine layout and robust construction.
