A 1960s swizzle stick from The Hog Penny, Hamilton's oldest licensed pub in Bermuda — its coin-shaped top a clever nod to Bermuda's very first currency. Venue: The Hog Penny, Hamilton, Bermuda Maker: Kempro, London, Ontario, Canada Materials: Hard plastic, jade/mint green Dimensions: 6.5 inches long Era: 1960s (estimated) Quantity: 2 available — sold individually, price is per stick Condition: Very good vintage condition. Lettering is raised rather than colored, so it reads cleanly despite its age. We have two available, one is slightly lighter, see last photo. Please review all photos before purchasing, as all sales are final. This swizzle stick's top is designed as a replica of Bermuda's historic "Hogge Money" coin, with a raised pig at center and "SOMMER ISLANDS" inscribed around the border — echoing the design of Bermuda's first coinage, struck around 1616. The stick itself reads "THE HOG PENNY — HAMILTON, BERMUDA" and ends in an unusual two-pronged fork-style tip rather than the more common rounded or pointed end. A wonderful find for the swizzle stick collector, the numismatist, the Bermuda travel enthusiast, or anyone who appreciates a clever pub name. The Hog Penny opened in Hamilton, Bermuda in 1957 and remains the city's oldest licensed pub, housed in a building that was once a bicycle shop selling Penny Farthing bicycles and later a meat slaughterhouse. Much of its interior — mirrors, benches, even sheep-shearing tools — was assembled from old Watney's pubs in England being decommissioned, some dating to the early 1900s. According to the pub's own history, The Hog Penny served as the original inspiration for the Cheers pub in Boston. Its name is a pun on Bermuda's earliest coinage: "Hogge Money," struck around 1616 for the English colony then called the Sommer Islands, featuring a hog on the front — a reference to wild pigs found on the island by early explorers — and a ship on the back. Genuine surviving examples of these coins are exceptionally rare and have sold at auction for well over $100,000. Browse more international and novelty swizzle sticks in our collection.
