Black Turmeric Rhizome Curcuma caesia (NOT to WA, TAS & NT) Supplied as either rhizome or crown with at least 2 growth points. Black Turmeric, known botanically as Curcuma caesia, is a rare and unusual member of the turmeric family. It is also called Black Zedoary or Kali Haldi. The plant takes its name from the striking blue-black colour of its cut rhizome. Its culinary use is limited by its naturally bitter taste, so it is grown mainly as a rare ornamental and specialty root. Native to north-east India, Black Turmeric thrives in rich, moist soils in heavily shaded areas. It is sensitive to both drought and frost and needs attentive care. As a perennial, it grows up to 0.5m in height and width. Plant in warm soil during September or October. Set the rhizomes 5-7 cm deep, spacing plants about 30-45 cm apart. In cooler regions of Australia it can be grown in a glasshouse. Divide clumps and replant fresh pieces every 3 to 4 years. Harvest the rhizomes 9 to 10 months after planting, once the lower leaves turn yellow or the stems dry and fall over. Rather than lifting the whole clump, home gardeners can dig at the side of a clump to remove rhizomes as needed.
