PREMIERE is a private exhibition experience at THE STUDY by Residence where emerging fine artists and designers have the opportunity to premiere their latest collections... The exhibition theme is an exploration of contemporary figurative art. Selected artists share narratives and imagery from their personal perspectives surrounding community and culture. Najai Johnson Curatorial Narrative ‘ Assemblage of Selves’ This exhibition traces how Black identity is depicted as something built, not given. Built through a figurative abstraction of migration and domestic space, through fragmentation of the body into parts that no longer result as a single whole- and through the objects of aspiration and status that come to stand in for a face. Exploring whole bodies in transit, to bodies broken into vibrant fragments, to bodies erased entirely and replaced by what they own. Each stage asks the same question with less and less of the actual person left in the frame: what remains of someone once you've named the parts, or the possessions, that are supposed to add up to them?
