Edwards developed a visual language combining the flora, fauna, and popular imagery of western Mexico with the restraint and delicacy of Asian ceramics. The workshop continues in the hands of Edwards's extended Mexican family, producing pieces that preserve the unmistakable character of a particularly fertile period in the history of Tonalá ceramics.About High-Fire Ceramics from Jalisco Tonalá and neighboring Tlaquepaque have been centers of ceramic production for centuries. During the middle of the twentieth century, Jorge Wilmot and Ken Edwards introduced stoneware clay bodies, high-temperature kilns, and new approaches to glazing to the region. Fired at temperatures above 1,100°C, the clay becomes denser, stronger, and far less porous than traditional low-fired pottery. Their influence spread through the region, and Jalisco high-fire ceramics today occupy a space between inherited craft, functional design, workshop production, decorative art, and contemporary experimentation.About Handmade Pieces Crafted by hand using techniques passed down through generations of master artisans. Variations in color, texture, and finish are inherent to the process — each piece is, by nature, one of a kind.
