The Golfo Dulce Poison Dart Frog (Phyllobates vittatus) brings a striking contrast of orange stripes, glossy black and blue-green mottling to a planted tropical vivarium. Active by day, this small frog is fascinating to watch as it explores the leaf litter. Males produce a distinctive trilling call. Supplied size: approximately 1.5–2 cm. This listing is for one frog. At a Glance Origin The Golfo Dulce region of south-western Costa Rica; humid lowland forest close to streams. Adult size Approximately 2.5–3.5 cm; females are usually larger. Lifespan Often 10 years or more, with 20 years possible in well-managed conditions. Activity Day-active and mainly ground-dwelling. Enclosure Provide a secure planted vivarium with generous floor space. For a compatible pair, a 60 × 45 × 45 cm enclosure is a useful starting size; provide more room for groups. Use a drainage layer, moisture-retaining but well-drained substrate, leaf litter, low branches and plenty of sheltered retreats. Small juveniles need a setup in which feeding and condition can be monitored easily. Temperature & Humidity Aim for approximately 21–24°C and high humidity, generally 80–100%, while retaining gentle air exchange. Avoid overheating: temperatures approaching 27°C are unsafe for this heat-sensitive frog. Use digital gauges and keep the vivarium out of direct sunlight. Mist as needed with amphibian-safe water, allowing drainage rather than waterlogging the substrate. Any accessible water must be shallow with easy exits. Diet Offer small live prey, especially flightless fruit flies and springtails; appropriately sized pinhead crickets can add variety. Dust feeder insects with suitable calcium and vitamin supplements following the product instructions. For these small juveniles, confirm the current food size and feeding routine with our reptile team at collection. Behaviour & Compatibility Initially shy, these frogs benefit from dense planting and quiet surroundings. Compatible animals of the same species may share a suitably spacious vivarium, but males can be territorial. Monitor feeding and behaviour, and separate animals if one is being excluded or harassed. Do not mix species. Handling A display amphibian: avoid routine handling, as delicate skin is easily affected by oils and household chemicals. Move it only when necessary, using a suitable clean container. Breeding Males call to attract females and care for eggs laid on leaves or in sheltered damp places. After hatching, the male transports tadpoles to water. Successful rearing requires a separate, carefully planned tadpole-care routine. Routine Care Check humidity, temperature, appetite and water quality daily. Remove waste and uneaten food, maintain drainage and keep the enclosure securely closed. Prepare and test the habitat before bringing the frog home. Click & Collect Only Order online for collection from Newlands Reptile Centre, Clondalkin, Dublin 22. We do not ship live animals. Wait for your collection confirmation before travelling. Individual markings and colour development vary.
