Austrian Model 1851 Cavalry Carbine – Dated 1852
Austrian Model 1851 Cavalry Carbine – Dated 1852 Austrian Model 1851 cavalry carbine in .72 caliber, featuring a compact 14½-inch rifled barrel and a handsomely preserved stock with a pronounced raised cheekpiece on the left side. The steel components exhibit a bright gray surface with light scattered darker patina, complementing the rich brown wood. The lockplate is stamped “852” forward of the hammer, indicating manufacture in 1852, with an additional armorer’s mark at the rear. Barrel markings include “71W,” a numeral “2,” and “854.” The name “BEUTZ” is stamped on top of the barrel immediately forward of the breech seam. The buttplate tang bears the numbers “51” over “139.” The carbine retains its distinctive double-ring slide at the wrist, front barrel band, and original button-tip ramrod. A fixed rear sight is formed by a raised portion of the barrel tang. The bore retains crisp, deep rifling. According to the accompanying condition notes, the lock functions correctly, with the hammer holding securely at both half-cock and full-cock. The stock remains complete and in excellent overall condition, preserving the characteristic cheekpiece and attractive contours of this Austrian cavalry arm. Its compact proportions, numerous markings, and strong state of preservation make this a striking example for a collection of nineteenth-century military carbines.
