A fine Kashmiri pashmina ring shawl (Palladar) in dark charcoal grey, its field woven with a lattice of black paisley medallions on a ground of tiny flowers, and finished at both ends with a deep palla of large interlocking paisleys in saffron, crimson, lilac and teal. The name comes from the test. A Palladar is a shawl fine enough to be drawn whole through a finger ring — the traditional proof of fine Kashmiri pashmina. Yarn this fine breaks if the loom is pushed, so the weaving is slow and careful, and there is no shortcut to a cloth that passes. The ring is simply the proof. The pallas Each end carries a broad band of large paisleys curling into one another across a ground that shifts from saffron to crimson, filled with flowering vines in lilac, sage and gold. A lilac border of small paisleys closes the band above, and a narrow teal-and-saffron edging runs beneath it. Everything is woven in rather than printed or stitched, so the pattern shows on both sides of the cloth. Over the shoulders the field stays dark and quiet — black paisley medallions in a neat lattice on the charcoal ground — so the warmth of the ends falls to the front when the shawl is draped. The colour Dark charcoal reads almost black indoors and shows its grey in daylight. Against it, the saffron and crimson pallas glow like embers — the warmest of our charcoal Palladars, and the one that most suits a winter wedding or an evening out.
