APM ShortGuides Manage Project Politics

Politics influences far more than governments — it shapes our relationships, workplaces and the environments in which projects are delivered. This guide helps project professionals understand the role of political awareness in navigating complex organisational dynamics. It covers: • What “project politics” means and why it affects every stage of delivery • How formal and informal power dynamics influence decisions and progress • Ways to anticipate, plan for and mitigate political behaviours that could derail outcomes • Techniques for managing emotionally charged situations and refocusing on objectives • Practical tools to address common political challenges within projects, programmes and portfolios By developing political awareness, project managers can better navigate competing interests, strengthen stakeholder relationships and improve the likelihood of successful delivery.
