Antique Box of Mourning Pins

In the 19th and very early 20th centuries when women had to observe strict mourning periods, everything they wore had to be black. Mourning pins are made of black or blue steel with flat black pin heads so that mourning veils could be fixed seamlessly to hats. This example still has a few pins inside along with a single needle.
