BURMESE SILVER PRESENTATION BOWL

A Burmese silver presentation. The bowl has eight vignettes – fine and crisply repoussé worked -of the Jataka tales of the life of Buddha. The figures are very deeply worked and the faces are still there. The polished rim of the bowl has the inscription : PRESENTED TO LIEUT. AMD MRS JH KEITH STEWART BY THE OFFICERS 39TH GARHWAL RIFLES 30 SEPT 1898 The 39th Garhwal Rifles was set up in 1887 as part of the Bengal Army It then became “The Royal Garhwal Rifles” as part of the British Indian Army, and after the Independence of India, it was incorporated into the Indian Army and is one of its most decorated regiments.
