Ravan was the king of Lanka. Ten heads. Four Vedas memorized. Undefeated in war. And the greatest devotee of Shiva who ever lived. His devotion wasn't quiet. It was loud, dramatic, all-consuming. He didn't just want to worship Shiva — he wanted to live with him. So he flew to Mount Kailash and tried to lift the entire mountain on his shoulders, to carry it back to Lanka. Gods, goddesses, and all. Shiva, mildly annoyed, pressed down with one toe. The mountain slammed back. Ravan was crushed underneath it — arms, shoulders, ribs — pinned in unimaginable pain, unable to move, unable to escape. The most powerful king in the universe, immobilized by a single toe. Most people would have begged. Ravan composed a song. Right there, under the mountain, in agony, he wrote the Shiva Tandava Stotram — a 17-verse Sanskrit hymn that scholars still consider one of the most rhythmically complex pieces of poetry ever written. Brutal. Relentless. Every syllable lands like a drum. He didn't sing for forgiveness. He sang because he was devoted. Pain didn't break the performance. It became the performance. Shiva was so moved he lifted his toe, freed him, and gave him a divine sword. He also gave him a new name — Ravan — from the Sanskrit root to roar, because his cry-song under the mountain shook the cosmos. That's where the name comes from. That moment.
