ALEXANDER CALDER "TANK TRAPS I" LITHO, 1973

Alexander Calder’s signature creation is the mobile. One of the most delightful examples of Modernist sculpture, Calder’s works are instantly recognizable in museums around the world. Calder was a prolific and active print maker. His prints are instantly recognizable because of his signature joyful palette and his flat geometric compositions. Occasionally he would flirt with figuration, using bold modernist shapes rendered in saturated primary colors. These creations posses a voice that is distinctly Calder's, radiating with optimism and mystery. “Tank Traps I” is a paradigm of a Calder print. The artist strategically uses the color black to create heavy outlines in his compositions, here indicating a series of orange and red pyramids against a churning sky. The repetition of pyramid shapes is something that Calder returned to frequently in his printmaking output.
