The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is one of the fastest jet airplanes ever built. It was also the first real stealth plane built by the United States. With a top speed over Mach 3+ (classified top speed), and a low radar signature it entered service in1968 as a strategic reconnaissance aircraft capable of extremely fast high altitude flights over enemy territory. It set many high speed and altitude records and remains to this day an icon of Lockheed's Skunkworks division that created many innovative new aircraft designs.
