Be Not Afraid (of Paper): Demystifying the Sketchbook Class
This class series will go over basic fundamentals for sketching and observing, forming and following through on projects, and how to get over perfection. This series is aimed at artists who can’t seem to keep a sketchbook, and would like someone to tell them homework assignments for a few weeks. But! Former drawing experience is not necessary! If you are a person who has tried to draw and became discouraged, this class is also for you!! Materials provided: One hardbound sketchbook. One 0.5 black micron pen. Two staedtler pencils (2H & HB). Materials encouraged: you are encouraged to bring materials you normally draw with, and/or incomplete sketchbooks you already own! (Please do not bring materials to sessions that can cause a large mess or require special clean up ie: no oil-based paint, no powdered pigments, no glitter, etc) Meets for 5 consecutive weeks on Tuesday nights for 1.5 hours. June 30th-July 28th from 5pm-6:30pm. Facilitated by Mourning Sky Harris @eltsia a self-proclaimed art supply hoarder and artist working in tattooing and illustration. Week 1: June 30th Introductions to each other and to materials: explaining paper weights versus materials and pencil hardness. Discuss individual artistic goals for the class and intro to “observing.” Week 2: July 7th Introduce lines and spirals warm-ups, and discuss warm-ups options. Continue observing practice with object(s) and interval sketching. Week 3: July 14th Sketching warm-ups with lines and spirals. Continue observing: discuss individual artistic goals for “style,” taste-hand disconnect, how to observe another person’s art. Week 4: July 21st Sketching warm-ups. Continue observing using requested objects/textures/people. Discuss letting go of perfection, and how to approach sketching free of self-judgement, how to form your own “homework”. Week 5: July 28th Discuss letting go of perfection and tactics for approaching sketching, how to self-critique your own work, and your future art goals. Observing practice, using all the skills you've gained.
