He has sought out small high altitude parcels that express balance and elegance. Quantities of each cuvée are often tiny as Jean Baptise seeks to focus on single parcel expressions. FARMING & WINEMAKING NOTESJean Baptiste seeks freshness in his wines, so has sought out vines mainly on the top of slopes as well as being planted on granite. All his vineyards are listed as ‘lute raisonnée’. The Bois de Biennier is above Jean-Baptiste's home in Andance at 300m and looks down onto the Rhone. The vines, surrounded by forest, have been in the family for 3 generations and Jean-Baptiste has split them into parcels after seeing that even a slight change of facing can produce very different expressions of the same grape in the same appellation. This wine is from west facing rows from vines planted on granite with some clay (unlike the east which is pure granite). The structure is beautiful, the fruit forward, the tannins very fine. We join Jean-Baptiste in wondering if Saint-Joseph will have its own classification system . . . maybe 20 years from now?
