Maze Mustard Upcycled Fan
Fabric that didn’t make the final selection. Set aside, never meant to be seen. When a longtime collaborator closed its workshop, we took in what remained. "Mottainai", a quiet sense of regret for what goes to waste. We brought the fabric to Hakuchikudo in Kyoto, founded in 1718. For over 300 years, its craft has been passed from one artisan to the next. A single fan goes through nearly 80 steps before completion. Through this process, the fabric found a second life. An urge to step away from the city, its density, its rhythm, its edges. The mustard spiral emerged in that moment. Only later did it reveal itself as a symbol of luck in Japanese art.
