Exceptional Extra Large Faraday & Son Cast Bronze Plafonnier with Star-Cut Frosted Crystal Bowl
Exceptional Extra Large Faraday & Son Cast Bronze Plafonnier with Star-Cut Frosted Crystal Bowl IG221824 An outstanding example of Edwardian architectural lighting by Faraday & Son, retaining its original cast bronze suspension hardware and fitted with a beautifully executed star-cut and frosted shallow crystal bowl. Acquired as part of a significant collection of approximately 200 pieces drawn directly from the archive of W. Sitch & Co., London. This exact model is documented in the original Faraday & Son 1913 trade catalogue as No. 11s, confirming both the maker and period with certainty. The Glass The shallow dish-form bowl is executed in crystal with a finely cut radiating starburst pattern worked from the centre outward across the full face of the dish. The cutting is precise and deeply executed — fine individual rays graduating outward from a dense central point to broad feathered forms toward the rim, the detail of which is fully visible in both the lit and unlit images. The exterior carries a satin frosted finish which diffuses the light evenly across the bowl while allowing the cut pattern to read with full clarity from below. When illuminated the effect is striking — the starburst becomes luminous at its centre, the rays drawing the eye outward across the full diameter of the dish. The Frame The suspension hardware is original cast bronze of substantial quality. A finely turned and lathe-finished baluster canopy piece with integral suspension ring carries three elongated link chains with distinctive diamond-form connector links at intervals, converging at a lower brass fitting above the bowl ring. The bowl sits within a plain rolled bronze rim ring retained by three small ball-end brackets. The original twisted gold and brown braided flex remains in place, a period detail that adds considerably to the character of the fitting. The bronze throughout carries a deep naturally aged patina with areas of verdigris consistent with age. Provenance Faraday & Son were a prominent London-based manufacturer and supplier of quality electrical lighting fittings operating from the late Victorian period through the Edwardian era.
