Maidenhair Tree - Gingko biloba

Maidenhair trees (Ginkgo biloba) are exceptional choices for Southern Ontario landscapes, thriving in Zones 5–6 with remarkable resilience to urban pollution, salt, and variable soil conditions. These ancient, slow-growing specimens are virtually pest and disease-free, making them low-maintenance investments for decades to come. Plant in full sun within well-drained soil—clay, loam, or sand all work well. Allow ample space, as mature trees reach 50+ feet tall and 20–30 feet wide. Water young trees deeply 2–3 times weekly during the first year to establish roots. Established trees are drought-tolerant but benefit from consistent moisture during dry spells. Apply balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring only; stop by May to prevent winter damage. Mulch 2–4 inches around the root zone, keeping it away from the trunk. Minimal pruning is needed—remove lower branches as the tree matures for clearance. Young trees may benefit from protective wrapping during their first few winters.
