Family: Olive (Oleaceae) Hardy to zone 3 to 9 (White Fringetree, Snowflower, Flowering Ash) Deciduous and dioecious hardwood shrub to small tree, flowering in showy, delicately scented, creamy white panicles to 20 feet. Native to the southern and eastern United States. Traditional use of root bark (TWM): Eclectics: “One of our most valuable indigenous remedies.” As decoction or tincture (preferred), relieves liver congestion, used externally against inflammations, ulcers and wounds. Mildly bitter. Source of lignin glycoside phyllyrin. Sun to part shade. Tolerates clay and black walnut, prefers a sandy soil, excellent in urban conditions, landscape and shelterbelt. Soak seeds in room temperature water for 24 hours, then plant in pots or deep flats in outdoor shadehouse conditions. Mulch. Seeds require a cold, then a warm, then another cold cycle, followed by germination in the spring. If attempting stratification in other than natural conditions, give 120 days cold, 120 days warm, then another 120 days cold and move the seeds to pots for germination in warm conditions.
