Large Japanese Arita Blue and White Charger with Peonies and Parrots, Edo Era

A finely painted Japanese Arita porcelain charger decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with flowering peony branches inhabited by two parrots, one perched among the blossoms and the other depicted in flight within a cloud-filled reserve. The broad rim is ornamented with a precise geometric herringbone border, while the reverse displays a scrolling foliate design surrounding an apocryphal Chenghua six-character mark. The composition combines delicate washes and darker line work to create depth and movement, showcasing the accomplished brushwork associated with nineteenth-century Arita kilns. Peonies, revered in East Asian art as emblems of prosperity, abundance, and noble rank, are paired with exotic birds to convey auspicious wishes for happiness and success.
