Makers Lab - Go-Karts: 20/07/2026 - 24/07/2026
20/07/2026 - 24/07/2026 HAVE YOU EVER DRIVEN A GO KART? DO YOU KNOW HOW THEY’RE BUILT? JOIN US ON THIS CHALLENGING BUT FUN MISSION TO FIND OUT. You’ll get to build one, test it AND race it! ~full description~ Mission Synopsis In this week-long mission, you will learn the basics of engineering by designing, building and testing pedal-powered go-karts in small teams. Your mission will start with a large pile of materials: wood, pedals, timber, nuts, bolts, screws, wheels and more. Supported by professional makers, you will sketch out initial ideas and designs until you’re ready to start prototyping. Using 3D drawing apps, you will design, make and refine your prototypes until you’re ready to start building at full scale. You will be working with drills, saws, and other basic hand tools. Skills acquired in the mission will include designing, measuring, tool use and tool safety, construction and engineering basics, and teamwork! The week will end with some exciting driving challenges. Everyone will get a copy of the model plans to take home. INSPIRED BY THE MAKER MOVEMENT, THIS ENGINEERING-LED MISSION GIVES CAMPERS A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD FULL-SCALE AND FULLY FUNCTIONING GO KARTS. THEY WILL THEN BE ABLE TO HAVE ANOTHER GO AT HOME, USING THEIR OWN PLANS.
