Shingleback Lizard Enamel Pin

The Shingleback Lizard, also known as the Bobtail, The Stumpy tail, The Armoured Lizard, the Pinecone Lizard, or Sleepy Lizard, is one of Australia's most distinctive and beloved reptiles. With its chunky, armoured body covered in large, rough scales and a broad stumpy tail that resembles its own head, this slow-moving skink is truly unlike any other. Found across arid and semi-arid regions of southern and western Australia, Shinglebacks can often be spotted basking on roadsides and wandering through scrubland in search of their next meal. They're omnivores, feasting on flowers, fruits, berries, insects and the occasional snail. There are 4 subspecies of Shingleback, spread across different regions of Australia, the Rottnest Island Bobtail, the Northern Bobtail, the Western Bobtail, and the common Shingleback found across inland and southern Australia. Our design here is inspired by the classic common Shingleback, recognisable to so many Australians who've spotted one plodding through the bush. Fun Fact: Shinglebacks are sometimes called the "faithful lizard" and it's easy to see why. They are the only known monogamous reptile species in the world, returning to the same partner every breeding season and tracking each other down using scent trails. Some pairs have been known to stay together for over 10 years! Sadly, their slow moving nature makes them vulnerable on roads, and those that lose a mate have been spotted staying loyally by their side for days afterward so this is certainly a motivator to watch out for these guys on your travels! ----- Our pins make such wonderful keepsakes and gifts.
