This is a lovely example of vintage French glazed linen thread, still in its original paper band, and it is exactly the sort of haberdashery item that would have been sold in French merceries throughout the first half of the 20th century. The paper label reads: • AU CHINOIS – one of France’s most famous thread brands. • N° 16 – the thread size (a fairly heavy thread). • 30 MÈTRES – approximately 30 metres of thread. • PH. VRAU à LILLE – manufactured by the firm of Philippe Vrau in Lille, northern France. The metal thimble is a French nickel-plated brass thimble, probably dating from the 1940s
