Nautilus Perpetual Calendar, 5740/1G-001

The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5740/1G-001 brought a Grand Complication to the Nautilus for the first time, but arguably its greatest achievement is how little the watch had to change to accommodate it. Despite displaying a full perpetual calendar, the case measures just 8.42mm thick, preserving the slim proportions that have always been central to the Nautilus. Crafted entirely in 18ct white gold, the 40mm case and integrated bracelet give the 5740 a noticeably different presence to its steel counterparts. The sunburst blue dial retains the collection's horizontal embossing, but is transformed by three calendar displays. Day and 24 hour indication sit at nine o'clock, month and leap year at three, while the date and moon phase share the display at six. Despite the amount of information presented, the familiar Nautilus dial remains remarkably easy to read. Making that possible is the ultra thin self winding calibre 240 Q. Measuring only 3.88mm thick, it uses a recessed 22ct gold micro rotor to provide automatic winding without adding the height of a conventional full sized rotor. The movement mechanically accounts for months of different lengths and leap years, meaning the calendar requires no manual correction until 2100, provided the watch remains running. The 5740/1G-001 succeeds because the complication never overwhelms the watch it inhabits. Patek Philippe added a perpetual calendar, precious metal construction and considerably greater mechanical complexity, yet the result still wears and reads as a Nautilus. For a watch with this much going on beneath the surface, remarkably little has been allowed to disturb the original design.
