MORECOMBE BAY: A FINE LARGE OIL PAINTING

MORECOMBE BAY: a very fine, large and most impressive OIL PAINTING on canvas of Morecombe Bay. In typically blustery conditions, some fishermen prepare to launch their boats whilst a mother and her children wave to wish them safe passage from the safety of the shore. Behind is the rugged vista of hills, mountains and mudflats, with one or two sailing vessels in the distance. (Morecombe Bay is famous for being Britain’s largest expanse of intertidal mudflats and sand. Whilst admired for its impressive sunsets across the Lake District, it is also known for its dangerous shifting tides and quicksand. Waters there can be very choppy and tides change rapidly.) Dimensions including the good swept frame: 37ins x 56ins. circa 1890-1910. *ARTHUR BLACKBURN was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire in 1853 and studied at the Leeds School of Art. He lived and worked in Yorkshire all his life and is known to have collaborated with Victorian artist John Atkinson Grimshaw.
