Detective's Cat, The

Piano Duet, c.2'15. Early grade 3-4 The piece opens confidently and energetically, allowing young performers to establish security and presence from the outset. Throughout the work there are several pedagogical challenges, including the alignment of syncopated rhythms across the ensemble, clear distinction between shared rhythmic moments and accompaniment melody roles, and the shaping of musical phrases to give the music direction and character. Pedalling also presents a challenge, as it is used rhythmically rather than in a purely legato manner. The title reflects the contrasting character of the music: at times playful and endearing, at others sneaky and mysterious.
