"LA COLMENA" GESHA

Farmer: David Omar Muñoz Ullua Origin: La Colmena, Honduras Process: washed Varietal: Gesha Roast level: light In the cup: starfruit, hibiscus, lemongrass This geisha is part of a piece of land in Las flores that is legendary. On a hillside across the road from Cesario Fernandez' (Spring Breakers) land sits the parcel that the geisha from La Colmena blooms and grows into magical fruit. We won't name drop but some very famous coffee people years ago said that it was the best piece of land in Las Flores....maybe even Santa Barbara. Whether that's true or not, who knows. It IS definitely unique. You wouldn't believe that "Gio's" farm and David & Ben's farm were that close because the climate and wind patterns are completely different, which is what gives that hillside the ability to grow incredible coffee. ABOUT DAVID... David´s grandfather emigrated to this place in the 1940s, he started planting coffee on a little plot of land. His father worked with him on his farms since his childhood and David worked on his farm too, for that they love the coffee. When David finished school started to work in mining for 8 years, then he worked in San Vicente Mill with Arturo Paz, Ben Paz' brother During he is working in San Vicente, in 2010, David bought property on El Cielito, and during his vacations, he went to plant Paca’s coffee; in the next years, he learned that the altitude, climate, and soil where the farm is located were perfect for specialty coffee; so, 7 years ago he started to prepared specialty coffees with help of Benjamin and Arturo. At the beginning of 2019, David bought half of this farm from Arturo who shared La Colmena with Benjamin, and since then he is working hard to improve the geisha. Since the COE placements (12th, 12th, 4th, & 3rd) Arturo has joked about buying his half back because before he sold, it didn't score high. David has other 2 farms and wants to improve his processes to produce sustainable coffee, that's why his farms have three certifications, Fairtrade, Organic (one farm), and Rainforest Alliance.
