Walt Sweet Onyx, Low D
Excellent intonation and a nicely balanced response from the first octave into the second. It does not take much air, and the tone is mellow and pleasing. Someone looking for a low whistle to carry a loud session would want something else, but for recording, for performance, and for playing at home or in small groups, this is a very good option. The finger spacing is one of the reasons players seek the Onyx out: it is close enough that a low D can be managed with a standard grip rather than piper's grip. Holes three and six are slightly offset as well, which helps further. The body is black polymer with a conical bore and profiled, undercut tone holes, in three pieces, with tuning at the head tenon and an adjustable joint between the hand sections. This one is in as-new condition.
