"Cloud Nine" Vintage Juban Underkimono

This listing is for a traditional underkimono (juban in Japanese) designed to be worn beneath a woman's kimono. A garden of good fortune unfolds across this brilliant red juban, with billowing clouds and oversized roses (?) and other florals drawn in intricate kanoko (fawn spot) shibori. Beneath the shibori, the silk is richly woven with a subtle jacquard of flowers, flowing ribbons, and traditional lucky treasures, adding a hidden layer of auspicious imagery associated with happiness, prosperity, and good fortune. Because of the smaller size and the attached pink, narrow tie that is stitched to the back to keep the kimono closed, we assume this was made for a young girl. The ties could be easily removed if desired for display. There are signs of age, with one small blemish on the front, see last photo. Underkimono make wonderful robes because they are cut shorter than outer kimono, so they do not have the extra length that is typically folded at the waist for traditional dressing. The lighter weight and streamlined shape make them easy to slip on and wear without added bulk. Perfect for the beach, poolside lounging, summer cover ups, or effortless layering at home or out and about.
