Make more of every box of mealworms. £29.95 — Worth £34.85 — Save £4.90 Everything you need to keep your live mealworms properly fed, spread out, lively and in great condition — without buying any fancy equipment. Inside your kit: 500g Fresh Live Mealworms 1kg Wiggly Live Mealworm Bedding 1kg Wiggly Farm Blend for Live Mealworms All you need at home is an old ice-cream tub or similar container, a carrot or two and a kitchen sieve. That's it. Why have we put this kit together? Because live mealworms are one of the very best foods you can offer your garden birds — but they are also a living food. And if you've gone to the trouble and expense of buying them, it makes sense to look after them properly. For years we've supplied live mealworms with simple bran-based bedding, and that works perfectly well. But we started thinking about it in the same way we think about everything else here on the farm. If the mealworm is going to feed the bird, why wouldn't we feed the mealworm well first? Hence this kit. The bedding gives your mealworms a clean, dry place to burrow and spread out. The Farm Blend gives them a more varied food. A little carrot provides moisture. And giving them plenty of space, keeping them cool and sieving out the accumulated frass helps keep the whole lot fresh and manageable. Better cared-for mealworms. Less waste. More value from your box. And a fantastic fresh food for your birds. Why feed LIVE mealworms to garden birds? Mealworms are not actually worms at all. They're the larval stage of the darkling beetle, Tenebrio molitor. More importantly for the Robin waiting impatiently outside your back door, they're insects. And insects are a completely natural part of the diet of many of our garden birds. Live mealworms provide protein, natural moisture and energy, and their movement makes them particularly attractive to insect-feeding birds. You can expect interest from birds including: Robins Wrens Blackbirds Blue Tits Great Tits Nuthatches Starlings Thrushes House Sparrows Blackcaps Pied Wagtails …and plenty of other opportunistic diners once word gets around. Live mealworms can be especially valuable when birds are working hard — during breeding and fledging, through periods of poor weather and as the seasons change. The current RSPB and BTO bird-feeding guidance includes mealworms as a food that can be offered throughout the year, with small amounts recommended during the warmer months. And, unlike a dry food, a live mealworm naturally contains moisture too. What makes LIVE mealworms different? Dried mealworms are handy and have their place. But live mealworms are the closest thing you can put on a feeder to the insects many birds would naturally spend their day hunting for. They move. They're soft. They contain natural moisture. And birds very quickly learn where to find them. If you've never fed live mealworms before, don't be terribly surprised if your Robin has the whole arrangement worked out before you do.
