They're the larval stage of the darkling beetle, Tenebrio molitor. More importantly for the Robin waiting impatiently outside your back door, they're insects. And insects are a completely natural part of the diet of many of our garden birds. Live mealworms provide protein, natural moisture and energy, and their movement makes them particularly attractive to insect-feeding birds.
