An American Dream by Claudia Selene (Ypsilanti, MI)
An American Dream Claudia Selene (Ypsilanti, MI) Oil, 16” H x 20” W x 2” D Artwork: I began planning this painting when Payton Gendron, a recently converted white supremacist, shot 13 black people he never met before in a supermarket in Buffalo, NY. "I did a terrible thing that day." Gendron said. ""I shot and killed people because they were black."" "An American Dream" is my exploration of the allure of violent, patriarchal white supremacism in the United States. What is it about these ideologies and their cultural connections to wealth, power and gentility that make them so attractive to young white men? Artist Statement: These paintings are part of a body of work exploring what current global events tell us about human nature.
