San Lucas Zoquiapam - Mexico

About San Lucas Zoquiapam Nestled in the mountainous terrain of the La Cañada region of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico is a small remote community called San Lucas Zoquiapam that’s lushly forested, has a dense fog layer, and more humid climate mostly thanks to its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico rather than the Pacific Ocean. Smallholder farmers in the area take good care of this lush landscape and have prohibited hunting of wild animals. Unlike many other coffee-producing towns in Mexico, this community has a large population of young coffee farmers who want to continue the craft using techniques that have been passed down over generations. They also want to keep cultivating varieties that are endemic to the area. Producers in this area plant native trees (a popular one is called the ice cream bean tree!!) in between rows of coffee plants to provide them with much-needed shade. These plants also can provide food, medicine, construction materials, and help with water retention. Producers usually have their own mini processing stations at home and harvests are carried out with the help of family and neighbors.
