Introduction to Sashiko at Kwartzlab

Everyone gets the same workshop, I just wanted to offer a reduced rate option in case money is tight for you right now <3 I host workshops to bring people together and share the joy of mending, and don't want cost to be the reason someone can't make it. Sashiko is a Japanese tradition of layering basic stitches to create intricate patterns on fabric. We’ve adopted Sashiko into the visible mending tradition, where it opens up worlds of possibility. You’ll be astonished how simple, strong, and striking your repairs can be with just a few simple tools. During our two hours together, Elysha will share the basic principles of Sashiko: how and when it works in visible mending, popular patterns and symbols to learn, historical and cultural context behind the practice You’ll create your own sample patches while immersed in the joy of visible mending as creative expression, soothing meditation, and social connection. All skill levels are welcome to this hands-on workshop. Beginners will build the confidence to start patching for fun and function, while more experienced menders can pick up new tricks while refining your skill and style. You will finish the class proudly with a fresh sampler of stitching techniques to use as a reference for future mending projects. This method is best for woven fabrics like jeans, shirts and tote bags. All materials will be provided including a selection of fabric, thread, needles and other notions. You are welcome to bring in a garment to stitch on if you’d like to jump right in, or (time permitting) if you’d like the opportunity to troubleshoot another mending project with my support.
