A promessa (the deal)

In A promessa, an empty coffin is suspended above the floor by two chairs, transforming a domestic object into an unstable structure. A small gold coin occupies the place where the head would rest, while a gold-coloured doorway appears behind it. The reduced perspective and pale interior keep the scene between furniture, ritual, and constructed image. The title adds a possible sense of promise or deal without resolving the scene. Part of the Apocalypse series, the painting brings the ordinary into contact with death and value.
