Time-Wrapped Lemon Quartz Necklace An Earlier Craft, Preserved in Kofu This necklace is made in 18k gold with a lemon quartz whose color leans toward olive green. A lapidarist in Kofu shaped and polished the stone with both faceted surfaces and areas that preserve cobbed marks. Cobbing was a roughing-out process practiced before mechanization to avoid inclusions and retain useful material efficiently. It is no longer practiced today. The chain passes directly through a loop of the gold ribbon surrounding the quartz. The cobbed marks began with a craftsperson using a chisel, pliers, and hammer to establish the rough crystal’s approximate form. Much later, a contemporary lapidarist in Kofu studied those traces and chose to incorporate them into the finished stone rather than remove them all. The two craftspeople never shared a workbench, yet their decisions remain visible side by side. Polished surfaces meet the marks of an earlier process, giving the quartz the feeling of a collaboration carried across time. The 18k gold ribbon completes the idea of a wrapped present, while its loop also forms a practical passage for the chain.
