Pair of Osler Satin Crystal Bowls in Decorative Brass with Opalescent Inserts Priced as a pair An incredible and rare pair of satin crystal bowls by F. & C. Osler, each seated in a decorative cast brass ring set with a band of opalescent cabochon inserts. The Glass The bowls are satin-finished crystal, cut with a tall petal-flute body beneath a scalloped upper border — a form immediately recognisable as Osler. The frosted surface gives a soft, even diffusion of the lamp while the cut ribbing catches just enough light to define the shape, the whole reading as controlled, glare-free light rather than raw brightness. The pair is consistent bowl to bowl, as an original matched pair should be. The Frame Above each bowl sits the detail that sets this pair apart: a decorative cast brass ring, worked with foliate ornament and set with a continuous run of opalescent glass cabochons that glow warmly when lit, ringing the fitting in soft points of milky light. The brass carries its original surface throughout, warm and untouched. Both fittings hang from decorative brass link chains to matching ceiling caps, consistent ring to ring. Condition In excellent original condition overall, with some slight staining to the satin glass and a couple of small chips to the outer edge of the bowls. The chips sit on the outer edge and are concealed when the bowl is seated in its ring — not visible in normal hanging. Honestly noted; neither affects the presence of the pair when installed. F. & C. Osler Founded in Birmingham in 1807, F. & C. Osler became the pre-eminent name in cut crystal lighting of the nineteenth century, celebrated for the crystal fountain at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and for supplying lighting to royal and noble clients across Britain, India and the Middle East. The firm's command of high-quality lead crystal and precision hand-cutting remains the benchmark against which period cut-glass lighting is judged. Provenance — W. Sitch & Co. W. Sitch & Co. were founded in 1776 and traded from their Soho premises until relatively recently, supplying antique and period lighting to the country house, heritage and film and television industries for over two centuries. This piece forms part of a significant acquisition of approximately 200 pieces drawn directly from the Sitch archive — one of the most substantial collections of curated antique lighting to come to market in recent years. Further pieces from the same acquisition will be listed as they are prepared and photographed.
