Ride With Our Ancestors

Bayadherra has a lot of meaning in the Yorta Yorta Dreaming stories. Bayadherra to me means a lot because I grew up seeing Bayadherra all over the river in my home town, Yarrawonga. Yarrawonga is on the Murray River, which runs through Lake Mulwala. I believe Bayadherra protects the Yorta Yorta people while out on Country. Bayadherra also protects the spirits of our Ancestors, carrying their spirit on his shield. Each Yorta Yorta family has a different Bayadherra protecting their Ancestors’ spirits. Every time Bayadherra hatches an egg, the family that was protected by the layer of that egg starts a new line of that family’s protection. The symbols on Bayadherra’s shield represent our Ancestors’ spirits that are being protected by Bayadherra. The background is the southern lights that happened in January 2026.
