Term 4 2026 | Beyond Acrylic Painting Fundamentals with Lesley Redgate (SAT)

Lecturer: Lesley Redgate Sat 26 Sep – Sat 17 Oct (excluding 3 Oct long weekend) 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Level – Beginner to Intermediate Age – 18+ This is an adult class and is not suitable for students under 18 years of age. This intensive Acrylic Painting course will further develop techniques and processes such as blending, underpainting and glazing. Students will also learn about colour, composition and design principles and how they relate to the development of modern art. The course will cover different exercises each week and in the last week tackle a longer project. Time permitting, Lesley will demonstrate the traditional canvas stretching technique. Glazing medium will be supplied. Materials: Acrylic paints: tubes – Matisse or Atelier artist quality recommended (Student quality is fine for beginners). A warm and cool of each primary colour. ie. Ultramarine blue (warm blue) Pthalo blue (cool blue), Alizarin Crimson (cool red) Cad. Yellow Light (lemon yellow) & Cad Yellow Deep (warm yellow) Cad. Orange Dioxazine Violet (purple) Hookers Green Titanium White Acrylic brushes with long handles (synthetic is preferred, or hog hair) Round – sizes no. 2, 4, 8, 12 1 Large Flat approx. ¾ ″ 1 small Palette knife Surfaces: Bring each week: A5 visual art diary or A4 folder (for notes). Canvas – A3 pad, Frederix or Mont Marte can be purchased at cheap shops, Officeworks or Art supplies. (Ensure it is canvas fabric and not textured paper.) 1 small stretched cotton canvas for Week 3. Tools & other materials: Disposable Palette (or oval paper plate with a baking paper sheet to cover) Paper towel, Soft sponge or rag Masking tape (1cm or similar) HB pencil, sharpener, eraser, ruler, scissors 2 x large Water containers/jars Optional: Apron, art shirt as acrylic paint doesn’t wash out. Plastic container with lid to transport palette home if you wish. Lesley Redgate, born in London in 1955, emigrated to South Australia in 1967. Her career as artist and educator began in 1977 upon completing studies in Fine Art at the SA School of Art (Uni SA) and Graphic Design (Tafe SA) in 2002. Lesley has worked as a specialist Art teacher, Graphic Design Lecturer and currently teaches watercolour and acrylics at ACSA while continuing her arts practice full-time. Winner of the Thomas Laird Memorial Traveling Art Study Award in 1993 led to overseas travel in 1994 and 1997. Her work was selected by the National Gallery of Victoria for their collection as a recipient of the Michell Endowment, in 1978.. During the 1990’s she painted en plein air in Whites Valley near Willunga with the Strout Farm group which included artists Geoff Wilson and Dave Dallwitz. Drawing inspiration from the changing Fleurieu landscape, the Australian Modernists and French Post-impressionists, Lesley has developed a style which focuses on the subtleties of colour to describe form. Her chosen mediums are acrylics and watercolour. She has been a finalist in The Portia Geach, Fleurieu Art Prize, Waterhouse Art Prize, Heysen Art Prize, Well Made – Guildhouse, RSASA Portrait Prize, Capital Permanent at Geelong Art Gallery and Semi Finalist – Doug Moran and has exhibited widely in public and private galleries throughout Australia. lesleyredgateart.com Images: Courtesy of Lesley Redgate.
