No. The NXP Killer is a fully independent bench tool. Those master devices do the same NCF29XX cloning among hundreds of other functions; this does that one job on its own, for a fraction of the cost. Does it touch anything in the vehicle? No. It is a bench tool. It reads and writes the chip on the remote's own circuit board and has no connection to the car at all. Chips and coverage Which keys can it copy? It copies most smart keys fitted with NCF29 chips. Open the key and read the chip marking to confirm before quoting the customer - the same model year can ship with more than one board revision. Can it copy NCF29AG chips? No. The tool supports most NCF29xx variants, but NCF29AG chips are explicitly not supported. If the chip is marked NCF29AG, this tool will not copy it. What is the difference between cloning and renewing? Cloning copies the data from a working key onto a virgin board so you produce a working spare. Renewing returns a used or locked key to a state where it can be coded to a vehicle again. Operating the tool How do I confirm a successful read or write? After pressing the read button, the green light will stay on to indicate a successful read. After pressing the write button, the green light will stay on to indicate a successful write. What does a red light indicate during read or write? The circuit board is not aligned with the adapter. Re-seat the board so every contact point lines up, then repeat the operation. This is the most common issue reported and it is an alignment problem, not a hardware fault. The indicator lights up on power connection, then the tool stops responding The power connection is unstable. Disconnect the power, reconnect it, and repeat the operation. Producing a reliable clone Which PCB should I use for the cloned key? Prioritise an original manufacturer (OEM) PCB of the same model as the key being cloned. An identical OEM board maximises compatibility on chip type, circuit design, RF performance and antenna matching, delivering a key virtually indistinguishable from the original in use. Universal aftermarket PCBs should not be used. Does the cloned key still need OBD-II programming? Once the original key has been cloned successfully, the cloned key typically does not require further programming or pairing to the vehicle through the OBD-II port. Can the customer use the original and cloned key interchangeably? In theory yes - once cloned onto a compatible PCB, the copy is fully interchangeable with the original. In practice, alternating between the two on the same vehicle risks rolling code desynchronisation, which can leave the remote function of one key inoperable. Hand the clone over as a dedicated spare key. Is it true that a cloned remote stops working after 256 presses? No. That claim circulates online but it is not correct - the key continues to function normally and does not become unusable after 256 presses. What can still occur, as with any clone, is rolling code desynchronisation. Can I clone Land Rover remotes on both low-spec and high-spec UWB models? Cloning is possible on both. On lower-specification models the process is straightforward. On high-specification UWB models, cloning causes the Ultra-Wideband function to fail, and the vehicle's UWB function must be disabled beforehand - otherwise the vehicle will not recognise the cloned fob, because the onboard system needs a valid UWB signal to unlock and start.
