The Art of the Philippines, 1521-1957, edited by Winfield Scott Smith III and published in Manila in 1958, was one of the first attempts at a general history of Philippine art, moving from Spanish colonial church architecture through Luna and Hidalgo to the modernist Triumvirate, with 19 color plates including Carlos Francisco's mural "Pageant of Commerce" and Arturo Luz's "Man with Mandolin." Its own foreword calls the pre-Spanish period "terra incognita," left for a more definitive study still to come.
