Roman Amber Glass Cosmetic Amphora Roman Empire, ca. 1st–3rd Century CE Height: 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm) A beautiful Roman amber glass cosmetic amphora dating to the early centuries of the Roman Empire. Elegantly free-blown in translucent amber glass, the vessel features a slender cylindrical neck, folded rim, rounded body, and a pair of applied loop handles extending from the shoulder to the neck. Amphorae of this type were used to store valuable perfumes, scented oils, cosmetics, and medicinal preparations, reflecting the sophistication of Roman daily life and personal grooming. The glass displays an attractive warm amber coloration with areas of soft iridescence, light weathering, and mineral encrustation developed during centuries of burial, all characteristic of authentic ancient Roman glass. It remains in excellent condition, preserving its elegant form and outstanding display appeal.
