Wall Console with Scagliola Top in the George III Style, probably Ireland, 2nd Half 19th Century

Wall console with a shaped top featuring fine scagliola inlay work in the form of garlands executed in dark green imitation marble. The base is finished in a dark green patina and raised on four elegant, block-mounted legs with applied stucco ornament in the George III style. The Italian stucco master Pietro Bossi introduced the scagliola technique to Dublin in the 18th Century. Brought from Italy, the craft flourished in Ireland and remained highly popular through the late 19th Century.
