RESURFACING MEMORIES BY ALICE
About Shinjuku is home to Japan’s largest nightlife district. Hidden within it is Golden Gai, a maze of narrow alleyways packed with more than 200 tiny bars. Long loved by novelists, photographers, and underground artists, the area has become one of Tokyo’s most iconic nightlife spots, drawing visitors from around the world. Photographer Alice once worked in Golden Gai, spending much of her twenties surrounded by its chaotic nights and unforgettable characters. Drunken customers running naked into the streets, people passed out on the sidewalk, musicians singing with guitars in hand. Through countless encounters, farewells, and late-night conversations, she continued documenting the people around her. This zine captures Alice’s memories of Shinjuku and Golden Gai through an intimate and deeply personal perspective. Unique Point Many of the photographs in this zine were shot entirely on Alice’s smartphone. As she explains: “When you’re trying to photograph drunk people who might suddenly do something unpredictable, the fastest camera is the phone you always carry with you.” This zine may completely change the way you think about camera gear and photography itself. At the same time, it offers a rare glimpse into Japan’s underground bar culture and the people who inhabit it.
