Carbon Contact Sample Holder - 4 mm max. sample thickness
The Carbon Contact Sample Holder works as an electrical conductor between an electrode material (free-standing or deposited on a substrate) and an external circuit. This holder consists of a PEEK body, PEEK sample mount, a glassy carbon electrical contact, and two PEEK screws used to fix the sample mount and the electrode in place. It is compatible with most inorganic and organic-based plates, free-standing membranes, and thin films deposited on flexible or rigid substrates. The maximum sample thickness is 4 mm. Glassy carbon is highly resistant to corrosion and chemically inert in a wide range of electrochemical environments. Unlike metallic contacts, it does not undergo corrosion or dissolution during electrochemical reactions, making it particularly suitable for applications involving highly corrosive electrolytes, aggressive redox couples, or long-term electrochemical testing. The carbon contact can be fully immersed in the electrolyte without introducing metal contamination or affecting the electrochemical system. Application note Typically, the electrode is prepared by fixing the electrochemically active sample into the holder using the PEEK screw. The assembled electrode is then immersed in an ion-conducting solution and used as a working electrode or counter electrode. During operation, electric current passes between the working and counter electrodes for a specified period of time. The glassy carbon contact is permanently integrated into the PEEK body, ensuring reliable electrical connection while eliminating issues associated with corrosion of metallic contacts. The holder is designed for repeated use and should be cleaned before installing a new electrode material. The glassy carbon contact can be cleaned by rinsing with deionized water, isopropanol, or acetone, depending on the type of contamination. For stubborn deposits, gently polish the surface using a fine alumina slurry followed by thorough rinsing with deionized water. Avoid excessive mechanical abrasion to preserve the contact geometry.
