It ensures proper pilot engagement and spacing for compatibility with NP205 transfer cases. Fitment Details 1979–1984 TH400 to Figure-8 NP205 Requires a 2WD 4L80E Short Output (6-1/4" stick-out): Trim output shaft 1-1/8" Long Output (7-5/8" stick-out): Trim output shaft 2-1/2" 1985–1991 TH400 to 6-Bolt Round NP205 Requires a 4WD 4L80E or a 2WD 4L80E with a 4WD Output Shaft No output shaft modifications needed Important: All 2WD and some 4WD (Pre 1995) 4L80E transmissions have built-in VSS sensors. If your transmission does not have a functional VSS, you will need to install one for proper operation.
